Ha-ha-halloweenie

by angeliska on November 8, 2008

Oh lordy. ¡Disko De Los Muertos!
nearly done skinned me and hung me up to dry-
such an amazing, insane, magical night.
The costumes were truly incredible,
(as you can see below- a few of my favorites)
there were some mind-blowing performances
and best of all- everyone there was so damn happy!
This has become a noticeably common trait
since the inception of GADJO DISKO-
giant grins on every face, general sense of goodwill,
and a total lack of pretension or snobbery.
Just gorgeous, crazy people gettin’ down
sweaty-laughing dance-floor style.
Which, in my opinion- is one of the most
important things you can do in life:
GET DOWN! Shake a tailfeather,
you know it will do you good.
If I can assist people in that endeavor,
then I feel completely satisfied.
In fact, my horoscope from Rob Brezsny’s
Free Will Astrology
was surprisingly apt:
“You have the potential to throw the best party ever,
and also to elevate the radiance of other people’s parties
through the force of your personality. Your social instincts are superb,
by which I mean they’re brilliant when it comes to mixing business
and pleasure and knowing how to strengthen alliances
while invoking maximum fun. Your knack for getting people
to work together in a noble purpose is at a peak.
Halloween costume suggestion: a cross between
a party animal and a community organizer.
Or you and your friends could re-enact the Boston Tea Party.”

Salomé + Yma Sumac

by angeliska on November 7, 2008

I was Salomé for Halloween this year, as in Dance of the Seven Veils,
daughter of Herodias, and all that. I suppose I oughtn’t have been
surprised at how many people I met had no idea who Salomé was..
All obscure biblical references aside- I mean, really?
The favorite femme fatale of the fin-de-siècle!

“In the turn-of-the-century imagination, the figure of Salome
epitomized the inherent perversity of women:
their eternal circularity and their ability
to destroy the male’s soul even while
they remained nominally chaste in body”

Bram Dijkstra, Idols of Perversity

Colin made a fantastic John the Baptist..
J’ai baise ta bouche, Jokanaan!
Some of my favorite renderings follow below:

Alla Nazimova as Salome
“The horror of my virginity

Delights me, and I would envelope me

In the terror of my tresses, that, by night,

Inviolate reptile, I might feel the white

And glimmering radiance of thy frozen fire,

Thou art chaste and diest of desire,

White night of ice and of the cruel snow!”

-Stephane Mallarme, from Herodiade

♥ My grandfather directed a televised production of the Strauss opera
version of Salome for the NBC Opera Theatre in 1954. John Cassavetes
and Sal Mineo played Jokanaan and the Page, respectively.
♥ The Dance of the Seven Veils is thought
to have originated with the myth of the goddess Ishtar
and the god Tammuz of Assyrian and Babylonian lore.
In this myth, Ishtar decides to visit her sister, Ereshkigal,
in the underworld. When Ishtar approaches the gates
of the underworld, the gatekeeper lets Ishtar pass
through the seven gates, opening one gate at a time.
At each gate, Ishtar has to shed an article of clothing.
When she finally passes the seventh gate, she is naked.
In a rage, Ishtar throws herself at Ereshkigal,
goddess of the underworld; but Ereshkigal orders
her servant Namtar to imprison Ishtar
and unleash sixty diseases against her.
After Ishtar descends to the underworld,
all sexual activity ceases on earth.
Also, I would like to mention the recent passing
of another one of my great inspirations-
the incomparable Yma Sumac:

Día de los Muertos – R.I.P. Studs Terkel

by angeliska on November 2, 2008

I was saddened to hear that Studs Terkel
died on Halloween. He was an amazing man,
whom I had the honor of meeting a couple of years ago.
We went to visit him at his house in Chicago
on Thanksgiving morning. It was bitter cold
and snow was on the ground, too bright-
it gave me a headache. I was hungry and
dizzy, but forgot all about that when
Studs opened the door in a vivid red plaid bathrobe,
flapping open to reveal a white undershirt
and little old man shorts. He crowed with glee
to see us, and kept offering everyone scotch
even though it was only 10 in the morning.
Perched in his leather easy-chair he was
a tiny elf-king, regaling us with stories
for hours. He and my grandfather met when
they were young actors with the
Chicago Repertory Theater.
The two of them sat and talked
and told tales all through the afternoon,
until the sun was slanting golden all around us.
I recorded every word on my little cassettes,
hoping to transcribe them later- alas,
all the tapes were ruined in the hurricane.
Studs was/is such a huge inspiration to me,
and so many people- for his fearless and
powerful work as boat-rocker and true-story-teller.
I have the same powerful urge-
to want to learn the stories of the people I meet,
ordinary/extraordinary- and to share them.

My great-grandmother, Hilda Satt Polacheck
worked with Studs on the Works Progress Administration’s
Federal Writers’ Project- I love the photograph of them below:

Hilda hated this photograph, she said-
because her slip is showing, which I guess
she though made her look addled-
even though she was very much together.
So here’s a picture of her my grandmother took-
I think it was for her passport:

I remember and honor Studs and Hilda today,
and my grandmother Jean- as well as all of those
dear ones who have traveled on beyond..
Here’s a wish I found from my friend Patience,
that sums up my thoughts pretty darn well:
Felicidades por que hoy es la Dia de los Muertos.
Espero que estas con tu familia, y todos los personas
a tu casa estan a recuerdo de los personas muertos.
A vivir en los corazones que dejamos detras no debajamos morir.

Some favorite quotes from Studs:
“Take it easy, but take it.” For years, this was
the sign-off line on his WFMT radio show
and his self-chosen epitaph:
“Curiosity did not kill this cat.”

Listen to this great obituary on NPR-
So Long, Studs Terkel, And Thanks

This was at Maker Faire this year (and last),
a huge papier-mâché calavera for Día de los Muertos.

You could buy a marigold (from a local organic farm, natch)
and write a message or the names of your beloved dead.
Oh yes, and clearly- I’ve discovered the magic of Poladroid!

There were so many fabulous Catrinas and Catrines
at ¡Disko De Los Muertos!
-this lady was one of the loveliest..
I’m still recovering from all of that-
my stars, it was insane!
Despite many disasters of all shapes
and sizes, the night was incredible-
pictures soon!

Eventful October!

by angeliska on October 10, 2008

There’s a chill in the air at night,
an urgency in the days passing,
flap-flap-flap pages turning
rapidly, go-go-go..
There is so much happening
this month already,
it’s crazy.
Friday, October 10th:

Treasure City Thrift is having their 2nd annual
Recycled Fashion Show!
I will be modeling for Annie Alonzi,
who is extremely wonderful.
She has made the loveliest
dress for me to wear- I can’t wait!
After the show, there will be much
music and merry-making at the afterparty-
but we will probably hop on over to the
Rhizome Collective for WinoVino’s
Seedy Release Party, to celebrate
their new album with naked dancing ladies,
cuban drummers and roasted lamb!
Monday, October 13th:

KAL is playing at the Cactus Cafe
at 8pm – do not miss this show!
These guys are Roma from Belgrade,
bad-ass musicians and cultural activists..
Wednesday, October 15th:

I will be playing with Hello Lovers,
opening for the inimitable Baby Dee!
Also on the bill, Precious Blood
featuring two of my favorite folks,
Ralph White + Amy Annelle
I love this article Mer wrote for Coilhouse:
Baby Dee: The Song of Self Acceptance
Saturday + Sunday, October 18-19th:

I will be performing as Angeliska + Arpadelamar at Maker Faire.
Colin and his blacksmith cohorts are going to be setting up
a Blacksmith Village out there, as well as countless other
interesting and entertaining artists, musicians and inventors.
Whew!
Not to mention everything we’ve got planned
for Halloween, but more on that posthaste!

Black Magic + Disko

by angeliska on September 17, 2008

The recent full moon and sudden turn
in the weather has made everything
extra witchy and strange..
I’m burning xoxoa incense
I found in Barcelona
(that inexplicably survived
the hurricane three years ago..)

and listening to Tones on Tail
and wearing feathers in my ears.
Everything is strange lately.
Here is something that makes me
forget about all of that- this little girl,
Silvia Moreno of Sevilla just 5 years old…

I am obsessed with flamenco-
and the passion that goes into the dance-
it can take a lifetime to master that kind of
fully present and potent awareness.
So I am beyond blown away to see this
bitty child tener duende..
“So, then, the duende is a force not a labour, a struggle not a thought.
I heard an old maestro of the guitar say:
‘The duende is not in the throat:
the duende surges up, inside, from the soles of the feet.’

Meaning, it’s not a question of skill,
but of a style that’s truly alive: meaning,
it’s in the veins: meaning,
it’s of the most ancient culture of immediate creation.
Everything that has black sounds in it, has duende.
This ‘mysterious force that everyone feels
and no philosopher has explained’
is,
in sum, the spirit of the earth,
the same duende that scorched Nietzsche’s heart
as he searched for its outer form
on the Rialto Bridge and in Bizet’s music,
without finding it-
“All the arts are capable of duende,
but where it naturally creates most space,
as in music, dance and spoken poetry,
the living flesh is needed to interpret them,
since they have forms that are born and die,
perpetually, and raise their contours
above the precise present.”
– Federico García Lorca, Theory and Play of the Duende

I am accompanying Hello Lovers
on ocean-harp tomorrow night- come and see!
Also, the magical and adorable
Faith Delphi
and
Aaron Blount
I am freaking out with joy about this:

It is a matryoshka doll with a theremin built into it!
Essentially, this is the perfect instrument- for me..
I must have one! My heart is exploding!
I mean, really. This is the best thing ever. So, so wonderful and weird.

Almost ripe, from our pear tree..
I read this passage yesterday,
and decided that it was just too
perfect not to share…
“Again she thought of a pear-
not the everyday gritty kind that
hung on the tree in the backyard,
but the kind sold on trains and at
high prices, each pear with
a paper cone wrapping it alone-
beautiful, symmetrical, clean pears
with thin skins, with snow-white flesh
so juicy and tender that to eat one
baptized the whole face,
and so delicate that while you
urgently ate the first half,
the second half was already
beginning to turn brown.
To all fruits, and especially
to those fine pears,
something happened-
the process was so swift,
you were never in time for them.
It’s not the flowers that are fleeting,
it’s the fruits- it’s the time when things
are ready that they don’t stay.
She even went through the rhyme,
‘Pear tree by the garden gate,
how much longer must I wait?’

-thinking it was the pears
that asked it, not the picker.”
-from Moon River, by Eudora Welty

Earlier this afternoon I passed by Rusty Jacknife
lolling around outside and thought he was dead!
His mouth was hanging open, and he looked all bloated.
Actually, he’s just really fat.

This also makes me unspeakably happy.
Oh yes and who wrote this?
I snatched it, and then forgot.
Whoever you are, I love you.
(Ah, I know now- it was Tami Nelson!)
“it’s raskolnikov. i am laying on a straw couch
watching raskolnikov shave in a broken mirror,
it’s fogged, his hair is wet. it’s summer.
my fingers follow the threads of an old handmade quilt.
i am sweating (for real, it’s hot in the stairwell, too)
there is an open can of pineapple pieces
and i am sucking the syrup off the rim.
there’s a jungle out there and the rain
hits the elephant eared green
hard like splashes and i have
rigoletto stuck in my head
but don’t want to sing because
my voice is gorgeous in my head
but these cords can’t hold a hum.
he looks like my brother
and i think about music
and how it connects us,
violin strings curled under
sketches of women on a desk (one of me)
littered with my jewelry,
i’ve gone back in time again.”

Triumvirate Lemniscate

by angeliska on August 9, 2008

Dog-days, my friends- where the storms tease us,
unfurling bruised capes behind them as they
hurry off to other counties- snubbing our parched
and pathetic orchards. Drought didn’t mean nothing
to me before I grew what I ate. We need several days
of good soaking, and soon! If you’ve got rain,
send some my way why don’t you?
I learned this word from Mlle. Fulguritus today:
Petrichor: the smell of rain on dry ground after a long dry spell.
Made by the oils from vegetation.

Also, let us not forget the venerable octothorpe, in honor of the day.

Snock and I on a winter’s day.
I received a letter from Michael Hurley yesterday
that made my heart sing and dance.
He is one of my most favorite people on the planet.
If you’ve never heard his songs before,
I suggest you do- because he is the greatest
songwriter alive, as far as I’m concerned.
He offered these very wise words regarding the season:
“The summer is severe, dynamic, holy.
Afford it your full attention.
Ride your bike and go swimming.”

Riding my bike and swimming are all I’ve been doing,
until last week- I burnt my leg on the motorcycle tailpipe.
It seemed fine at first, so I didn’t worry about it too much-
but then.. Oh it got bad. I actually went to the doctor,
and she fixed me up- now it’s looking much better.

I learned a few things about what to do for bad burns.
Check out my hairy leg, and hilarious tan lines on my feet.

Michael will be joining Amy Annelle and Ralph White
on their High Plains and Peaks US Tour- check it out!
HIGH PLAINS SIGH

Today is the day my mama died.
I lay cradled in the hammock all afternoon,
crumpled with cramps- reading (The Golden Apples,
by Eudora Welty- which is incredible)
and thinking of her. I’ve been reading her letters.
Getting a sense of her voice,
her hopes and fears. Lately I can’t seem
to light any candles, or do any work to bring
the good on friends in need, or to honor
all my dead. Only the most abstracted
gestures surface. The connection,
the focus is hazed- but my dreams
are more vivid. Everything else seems
scattered. I get exhausted with anniversaries
of death
– more and more every year.
But she’s the first- the matrix,
the door where I came through
doesn’t exist anymore.

Hot Pursuits

by angeliska on July 17, 2008

Texan summertime truly encourages innovation
in the realms of refreshment and distraction-
Anything to take your mind off your parched throat,
and the rivulets of sweat dripping down every limb..
Thus, fancy sodas, frivolous frocks, and every night
a cabaret, a soiree, a show!
This Thursday (technically speaking, today)
I will be joining the inimitable Hello Lovers
for a couple songs at The Mohawk.
They are so incredible– I feel honored
to be invited to play with them.
Check out also the new album,
Gone With the Wind
I play ocean harp on it as well!

This is the dénouement of Trivia Travesty last week..
As you can see, there was cake,
and sasquatches, and songs.
Wonderful.

Even Hillary Clinton was there!

This is what I wore to the show:
-vintage hat from Uncommon Objects
-haircombs from Miss Angie
-dress from Betsy
-stockings from I forget where..
-boots from Halo in Portland
How did my dress get so dirty?

I rediscovered the miraculous heat-cure
Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray Tonic
I wrinkled my nose at it when I was wee,
but you know what? It’s actually fabulous.
Especially with a curry-chicky salad sandwich
from Wheatsville, and the above record
Maori Love Songs accompanying the meal.
A werewolf named Lou commented-
“He kind of looks like a Maori Elvis.
But then again, it looks like they’re dancing naked in a wicker basket too.”

Lavender soda, with Monin flavoured syrup
and Topo Chico over ice is also divine.
Right now I’m drinking Apple-Pear sparkly juice,
which is very green and tart and lovely.
Russian tarragon soda is also very interesting-
try it if you can find it..
Coilhouse is (in their own words)
“A love letter to an alternative culture,
written in an era where culture no longer exists.
On paper and on the web,
a collection of articles, interviews, rants,
musings and imagery showcasing the planet’s
bravest explorers of Ye Olde Future.”

See the amazing list of the
Top 10 Most Preternaturally Beautiful Men
and you’ll start to get the picture..
So, so good.
Their exposition on the origins and sources
of our own personal weirdnesses
is a subject I will never tire of..
What made you weird?
So here’s a few things that contributed
to me being the creature I am today:
When I was nine, my best friend Carie
made me my first mix tape- it was amazing!
The first song was Nina Hagen’s
Born in Xixax- still one of my most favorites ever..
Here is Nina Hagen on the Merv Griffin show:

Best exchange:
Merv Griffin: “You have a wonderful – what would you call it? – contralto.”
Nina Hagen: “I would call it my individual God-identity, Merv.”
Followed by an impromptu sing-along
of “Don’t Kill the Animals” featuring Nina, Merv, and Don Rickles.
Thanks for sharing this, Ambassador Gorvetzian!
Earlier still, I saw this- on Sesame Street..

I loved this thing SO MUCH.
I tried to describe it for years, and only a few people
knew what I was talking about-
seeing it again is an instant
time-machine to me, age 5.

I got inspired that day to unpack a box of my
favorite children’s books- in a large way
responsible for my world vision and aesthetic.
Incredible illustrations and feminist rhetoric
seem to be the main themes.
Thanks mama + papa!
