Late Night

by angeliska on April 3, 2009

I had a late night earlier this week, stayed up painting, pushing it all to the wall
in order to have it done by morning. You reach the state of mind, alone
in the studio, where time stops. It reverses and starts up again but with phosphor
in all the cogs, it turns to jelly. Your hand’s all cramped up, tracking streaks of
paint on the velvet furniture, sneezy. Then, a beacon in the night! Chocolate!
Not just any chocolate either, y’all- the Mast Brothers are the Emperors
of Cacaoville, as far as I’m concerned.. We bought this fancy bar on
Mlle. Bobisuthi’s sage recommendation at Miette in San Francisco, um..
back in November! Crazy, I know- who can resist that long? We had hidden it good!

Dark Milk Chocolate + Salt + Pepper = best chocolate bar maybe ever.
Oh yes, so- during all the March madness, I succumbed and got on Twitter.
Perverse curiosity prevails, once again! The only way I can feel halfway
decent about it is if I mostly post lil’ bits in haiku form. It has to be some kind
of challenge to hold my attention- or anyone else’s for that matter!

At 3 in the morning, when your brain is buzzing from tea and staring,
sometimes a wee break is called for- this one involved gobbling
said chocolate and taking random pictures of areas in my studio.
Below the little bookshelf by the southern window, left to right is a…
♥ Tin of buttons I couldn’t for the life of me find the other day
♥ Hmong silver collar with bells and forest squirrel creature engraving
♥ Magical gold + lavender twine
♥ Mysterious slag glass bud vase
♥ Jellyfish glass with Oddfellows medallion
♥ Assorted books on demons + alchemy
♥ Flower teacup (just the edge of it)
♥ Jar of beads

This is on top of the little paper file on my computer desk:
♥ Teensy doll in golden egg cage from Miss Megan
Print blocks with party hats from Berlin 1912 catalogue
♥ Tattered doll dress
♥ Cut-out of log I made for my bee-log logo
♥ Labradorite and cuttlefish bone ring Francesca made for me
♥ Ermine tail
♥ Necklace I made with white jade moth and black pearls
♥ My favorite found photograph ever of a girl who I wish
would be my best friend if she were alive, or if I had lived then.
♥ Victorian calling card with carnation
♥ Photobooth strip of Colin and I making scary faces
♥ Khamsa earrings on peacock stand
♥ Maja perfume flamenco dancer doll toppled over in the back.

Near my drawing table:
♥ Wooden photo album, a wonderful hexmas gift from Colin’s brother and sister-in-law
♥ Magic lantern slide depicting wolves, goats, and a dog riding on a happy deer.
♥ Porcelain framed picture of my mama and me
♥ Cheerful Biscuits tin, my favorite- from my mother
♥ some pretty ribbon with ladies on it

On top of the filing cabinet:
♥ Falling-apart Victorian Album

♥ Various language vocabulary cards and dictionary, Russian and Spanish

♥ Deer leg found on the side of the road in the desert (maybe Utah?)
♥ Chambord bottle from the liquor cabinet of an ancient old woman in New Orleans,
I stayed in her mansion in the Garden District the first time I ever went to Mardi Gras
when I was 15. The house was filled to the brim with freaks trying on all her fancy hats,
drinking her Vandermint and moldy cordials and dancing to Ween in the kitchen.
♥ Rose Pastilles tin decorated with pearls and beautiful secrets inside
♥ Wonderful books, passed down generations and gifted:

Here’s what I was up working on for my friend’s project,
for which we were asked to design a dress for a woman who inspired us.
My lady is an albino princess who walks between worlds and guards the spirits
of lost, endangered and imaginary animals. Her symbols are the white rose,
the tiny silver heart and the crescent moon. Her favorite hour is rosy twilight.
Her dress is made out of purest black-hole tulle and supernova chiffon.
Her jacket is made from melted glacier velvet and fluorescent forest moss,
and embroidered with totems of her beloved creatures.
Her name is unpronounceable in any language.
While making this, and eating chocolate and staring at all my piles of things,
I listened to a BBC Radio DJ set from Bjork in 1998, which I found thanks to Lau!
We were apparently obsessed with the same Nico and Meredith Monk songs
at the exact same time, ah! Eleven years ago? Bizarre.

SXSWANBOATING

by angeliska on March 30, 2009

Oh yes, so- SXSW roared up in a flurry of flashbulbs
and new friends from all over the place! There was just
SO MUCH to see and do! Try as you might, you really have
to just pick and choose and then let serendipity take care
of the rest. Highlights for me included seeing Vetiver,
Exene Cervenka and Shearwater who all put on great shows..
Larkin Grimm’s show however, was really the best thing I saw
the entire week. If you are presented with the opportunity to see her,
do it. She will blow your mind. Let’s just say- I cried, I laughed,
I learned about spirit animal orgasms and trans-dimensional soul travel!
I had the pleasure of meeting her and her lovely band, and making them
lunch! I’ll be interviewing her soon for Coilhouse, so keep an eye out!
I also interviewed Au Revoir Simone in a beautiful garden- such a treat,
those girls are so sweet! I’ve been listening to their new album non-stop.
I did a photoshoot with Chad and Tracy of St. Mary’s for their upcoming
album in and around Grackle Gardens (aka. our humble abode) which
was great fun! They are the cutest and the sweetest, and they make the
most gorgeous music. I am now the proud wearer of one of those adorable
witch-hat fascinators as well! I will have to model it soonly..

These witches are photogenic! You wouldn’t guess it from their serious
black magic demeanor, but we were all giggling and cackling and cutting up
so much that I have hundreds of hilarious shots of total ham! Hee!

Miss Amelia had a brilliant plan- she discovered the magic swanboats that float
on Ladybird Lake! I’ve decided that swanboating is really my preferred method
of transportation/exercise. They are operating by foot pedals, leaving your hands
free for all manner of other activities! Truly perfect.

How divine it was to finally be acquainted with Miss Gala Darling,
who is utterly delightful (and an excellent swan-copilot!)
She is made of strawberry sugar and sequins and stars!

Doesn’t this just look like the most wonderful way to while away an afternoon?
That’s Mlle. Lau looking completely serene in the giant swan-
It was fabulous to meet her as well- and I love that we live in the same city!
Also, Zoetica Ebb and I met over a mountain of guacamole-
which is really the ideal circumstances to make anyone’s acquaintance!
So many amazing women- how lucky I am to be constantly surrounded
by such strong, sweet, fancy and clever ladies (and gentlemen!)
I feel like I encounter a new one just about every day-
and it’s an incredible whirlwind to twirl in, I must say. Hot damn!

Fruit + Flower

by angeliska on March 25, 2009

All of a sudden it is really and truly Spring, and I can’t even
begin to say how relieved I am. Not that winter here is so insufferable-
(it’s really so mild and short) but ever since we started our little orchard,
this has become my favorite season! Everything is blooming like crazy,
and the air is fragrant with the perfume of countless blossoms..
Oh yes- happy belated Vernal Equinox! It got lost in the haze of SXSW, alas..
All the madness of the last month (which I shall recount in detail posthaste!)
required that I undergo massive decompression- which involves running
wild in the garden, digging in the dirt, staring at the sun, spinning in the rain,
swinging in the hammock, lots of reading, drawing, dreaming..

My friend Mr. Garbs presented me with this lovely Columbine the other day-
they are one of my very favorites.. Aren’t they the best fairy flowers?

Baby blueberries! We’re going to have bumper crop this year,
and I can’t wait for them to ripen so I can gobble them up!

The mandarin orange blossoms are so heady and covered with bees..
Their scent is thick like milk, and makes me want a Ramos Gin Fizz!

Nectarine blossoms peeking out! It’s hasn’t fruited for us yet, so fingers crossed!

The Venus Flytraps are thriving- check out those thick stems, eh?

These geraniums are totally psychedelic, and make me very happy.
We went by Gardens (a very fancy place indeed!) today and picked
up a whole bunch of wonderful plants- including a fuschia!
I can’t wait to try and not kill it- I know they are notoriously tricky..

I was instructed to eat lots of Swiss Chard today, which is not a problem
because it is maybe the most perfect food. A big storm rolled in this afternoon
and doused everything, making the leaves glisten. More of that please!

Our bougainvillea has finally decided to bust out- check out that colour!
Being outside today made my shoulders drop, I could breathe easier.
It felt good to have my hands on solid things- rocks, soil, vines..
Neighbors stopped by and we chatted en español (mine is terrible still, sadly)
and everyone was excited to see everything blooming..
I am so glad the days are longer now- I can stay outside until late,
spying on hummingbirds and mucking around in the beds- heavenly!

Frozen Maidens in Folkloric Fantasyland

by angeliska on March 15, 2009

So winter has decided she’s not quite ready
to hit the road, grey and glistening furs dripping
ice-thaw in her wake! One last cold snap has
popped us right in the jaw, but it brought lots
of rain- which we needed so desperately!
One last chance to flaunt the velvets,
the capes, the leather gloves and pink noses!
In honor of this one last chill, I simply must
expound ad infinitum about the most perfect
show this season, or really maybe ever..

I think that it is really so incredibly sweet and thoughtful
that John Galliano created a Fall/Winter Collection
just for me! Honestly- this is the stuff of my wildest dreams
and ancient ancestral memories made tangible,
and I’m swooning with covetousness.

I hate the cold so much, but I think that I could
learn to love it if I could only somehow acquire
this entire collection- I’d be crooning Sweet Home Siberia
and bundling up for life. Except, of course when
the occasion called for me to don one of those
diaphanous platinum frosted evening gowns!

I want every single piece- every stitch of embroidery,
every tarnished silvery sequin, every gold coin
and gigantic ovarian armour-plate!
Oh yes, and hello- giant platform pom-pom boots?
Those too.
Wrap it all up, I’ll take it.

This reminds me so much of the costume we made for Miss Kaia
when she played the ghostly silent film star in the movie
we were working on in New Orleans..
I really must finish editing that someday!

Frozen Ukrainian brides walking in the snow for a long, long time
until they are crying icicle tears cascading from frozen eyelashes..

The headdresses and makeup couldn’t be more perfect. So inspiring!

I think maybe this grey ombre only looks blue
because of the light- but really, maybe it should be..

Oh, you! How do you know me so well?
John Galliano Fall/Winter 2009: Fashion For Euro Gypsy Silent Film Stars
Galliano’s Frozen Ukrainian Brides

The video of the whole show is really worth looking at as well
(but I’ve already gone overboard on this one, so track it down!)
the music, the tunnel- and the SNOW! Oh my stars, so sublime.

10pm-4am..

I am very excited about this party- it’s an insanely good line up
of some of my favorite people, and I am so ready to dance!
Having Golem and the Minor Mishap Marching Band on the bill
is so fantastic- I love bringing the balkan and the brass..
..And then there’s the booty bounce!
I am officially obsessed- there’s some amazing shit happening
down in New Orleans, and it’s coming over here!
My dear friend J. (aka DJ Rusty Lazer) turned me on to NOLA Bounce
(and Sissy Bounce especially) awhile back,
and he’s been out spreading the word far and wide..
Check out his writing about it here:
Popping My New Orleans Sissy Bounce Cherry!
and here:
Sissy Bounce Sweetheart’s Ball
I really loved this bit from him also:
“I hope that people say the thing they feel the most
when they come to anything I’m involved with is a sense that,
no matter what’s happening on stage or otherwise,
they feel free to do whatever they want
without any tingling judgment sensations.
It’s probably why I like Sissy Bounce so much.
To bring your overwhelmingly queer style out
to a pretty brutal town like New Orleans
and have it be accepted at all is testament enough
to your power as a performer…but to transcend that acceptance
and actually begin to redefine what a genre like Bounce is…
well that’s something else altogether.
And then to take that one step further
and be generally indifferent to the boy/girl dichotomy
by declaring yourselves “sissies” (and nothing more)
is pure Dirty South gold to me.”

Check out our pal Lefty’s
Sissy Bounce Mixtape!
if you want an introduction to the music..
His girl Miss Alison wrote an article about
Sissy Bounce for the Gambit
that’s definitely
worth reading as well..

I so wish I had been at this show..
I love the part near the end when J. drags
Miss Altercation up on stage to show what
she can do! She’s coming to Austin to teach
us all some moves, y’all! I’m so excited-
learning to booty bounce is one of my
all time number one goals. I have so
much awe and respect for those I know
who have mastered the extremely precise
muscle isolation required to make it work!

Sissy Nobby and the Rumpshakers always put me in a good mood!

Just to give you an idea of the kind of spectacle Minor Mishap is capable of..
I can’t wait!

Emergence

by angeliska on March 9, 2009

The Texas Biennial opened this weekend here in Austin,
to great fanfare and folderol- very exciting indeed,
but most thrilling of all was seeing my sweetheart’s
work literally emerge over the last six months
from raw elements into an intimidatingly beautiful creature.

This is Emergence, Jr. – the maquette Colin created
to model the large sculpture on. This, and the following
photographs (except for the last two, which are my own)
were taken by our friend Chip Warren– a very talented photographer!
You can see his great series of images from the install here:
The Emergence of Emergence

Colin welding among the tentacles..

It is amazing to me how steel can seem so malleable,
so like flesh or frond. Seeing firsthand the process that
it takes to create that effect is incredible. Colin is really
a master at shaping metal into graceful forms that echo
primordial plants or ancient marine creatures.

On the dark and stormy day of the install at Butler Park,
I kept seeing shades of tales from H.P. Lovecraft
as this strange Cthulhu-esque was birthed piece by piece.

Sparks fly; grinding one last bit..

The finishing touches were added as the sun was setting.

Every mark on those tentacles was put there by the man I love
swinging a hammer with great force- I have so much admiration for him,
watching him work so hard night and day to bring this piece to fruition.
Many of his friends and family also devoted much time and sweat
to the endeavor- we are so lucky to have such a kick-ass community!

Emergence – Colin McIntyre, 2009
(Alas, this was the best shot I could get in the gloaming- more to come soon!)
It really is so astounding in person- if you live in or visit Austin, I highly recommend
a picnic at the site, and don’t forget to pack the squid + seaweed salad!
If you happen to be a collector, or know of any with a penchant for large scale
metal sculpture- don’t hesitate to get in touch as this piece is for sale.

Parades

by angeliska on March 1, 2009

It’s always so strange- the feeling of traveling a long way
in the course of a day. A morning, and then an afternoon pass
on the journey and I am hurtled across these old familiar highways
back to a place that still calls me home. It felt like landing on
another planet, though. Backwardsville. The streets somehow all reversed,
and I emerge from the car with my head on upside-down, my eyes crossed.
Naturally, the first thing we do upon arriving is head to a parade.
Downtown is a mess of color and bodies and the wafting grease and sugar
aromas from the glare of the food-carts. I am utterly overwhelmed.

This is the first picture I took when I got New Orleans.
I was light-headed with hunger and flashing lights from
shopping carts loaded with one thousand LED swords
and medallions and wands and gewgaws- but I hate eating
while standing or walking, especially when I really need to
concentrate on it. I like to focus on my meal, very slowly.

In the end the lure of the corn dog won out. I’m not ashamed.
It was magical. How could I forget how delicious?
My six-year-old self was totally gratified, and begrimed with mustard.

Louie let me take his picture. He and his sister May have been running
this stand for 50 years. Every parade is etched into their faces, which
were impossible to capture. They were my favorite part of the night.

Have you ever been to a big parade during carnival season?
This video is from 1941- I suppose not all that much has changed,
except everyone really dressed so much better of course.
Even the people not in costume look pretty fabulous.

They are beyond surreal. I love the crazy floats and the marching bands.

I know a lot of people who make their living building and painting
these floats all year- I love how old fashioned they are, still shining
with painstakingly applied gold and silver leaf. Some are satirical,
but most are just beautiful- you have to drink it all in quick as it goes by..

In the morning I wandered over to my dear friend Miss Raven’s house,
where we broke our fast on poached eggies and fruit salad and
caramel tea. Afterwards I experimented with my new camera,
peering at all of her treasures. The doll above is named Elspet,
and she suffers from acute elephantiasis of the lower extremities.

This dress used to belong to Mae West!

Masks and horns and mourning maidens..

Monsters loom overhead- beware!

Raven’s kitchen is one of my favorites- I ought to have tried to capture it,
and all the shades of green, but my breakfast distracted me.
I loved watching this arrangement of flowers and feathers on
the kitchen table be plucked at over the course of the holiday
and transformed into various headdresses and other adornments..

Isn’t this setting crazy? Lily magic! Cloud-cuckoo land!
I really had to figure out the camera quickly,
and I have to say- I am falling in love with it.
More evidence of this to be revealed very soon indeed!

Seawitches, Stormsirens, and Horned Beasts

by angeliska on February 27, 2009

Mardi Gras was so amazing and perfect,
and I can’t wait to take a look at the pictures
and elaborate on all the adventures-
but! I just arrived home from a long journey
and am muchly tattered and weary..
So this little teaser of three of my
very favorite photographs from last year
will simply have to suffice until I can
unfurl all the magic that so very recently occurred!

Miss Angie, Empress of Seadragons

Pandora, The Storm-Siren

Colin, Le Minotaure
Soon, soon!

Mardi Gras, My Love

by angeliska on February 18, 2009

Sometime around midnight tonight I shall hit the road,
traveling down that old familiar highway to make my pilgrimage,
to celebrate my most favorite holiday- yes, darlings, it is Mardi Gras time!
I never got around to sharing these photos from last year-
I was preparing to when I found out that my friend Vi
had died suddenly, and the tangle of mourning snared me
in tears and thorns- later, I had lost my momentum somehow..
I just realized that today is the one year anniversary of her death.
If you have a minute today, go and read this
letter that Vi wrote
– it’s important.

So now, a year later I’m looking at these images and remembering
all the iridescent cacophony that is carnival and my heart is beating
quickly with anticipation that soon I will be gazing up at this cathedral
again, dancing in the streets with all my dear ones, and the whole city.
Please, please, please let the weather be as perfect this year as it was then!

It couldn’t have been a more perfect day- warm, with a dazzling blue sky.
Colin made this Minotaur costume in about five minutes, and looked
totally amazing. I think maybe he should paint himself gold every day..

Look at these little pastel petitfours! Can you believe that they did not plan
to be birds of a feather with those pale wigs? It’s true. Psychic sisters!
They’re all mostly oceanic themed costumes as well- so beautiful.

Miss Dana Kitten was a Forest in Winter!
She gave us many icy feather-snowflake butterfly kisses,
and melted our hearts with her beguiling ways.

Miss Raven was a most luminous and perfect pearl,
shimmering out from her pink scallop shell cowl.

Liser had one of my most favorite costumes- we were looking around for her,
and everyone kept saying, “She’s still in bed!” we were aghast until we found her
and discovered that it was true! I loved her hair splayed out on the pillow,
with condom and teddy-bear, and the sleep mask that reads Sweet Musings
that she found in the dumpster. It was heaven to curl up next to her
and pretend to still be in bed, too. Mardi Gras is an early morning thing, y’all!

Okay, so Miss Jenny and her beau Jon are basically the King and Queen of Mardi Gras
as far as I’m concerned- their costumes are always so perfect and so incredibly detailed!
If you could see their outfits up close, your eyes would just goggle out of your head
at the psychedelic wonderment of a jackalope in lederhosen and his mad-hattered belle!
By the way, her hat reads, “Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler!” -yes, indeed!

This was the cuteness that ate my mind.

Capricornia + Le Minotaure- we were horned beasts, as befitting our astrological natures.

Miss Jackie is always so stunning. Her costumes really are something else.
She has a real poison dart blower too, so you’d better watch out!

Miss Angie is the Queen of the Seadragons! The wind was blowing like crazy
in Jackson Square, and we were worried that it might take her away into the sky-
as her golden finned headdress was acting as a sail! The woman looks good green.

Oh Sienna! La bella cubanitsa! We were dancing in the street eating plums and nectarines.

Beastly boys! David’s creations have inspired my to strap taxidermy to myself this year-
only, not to my face. Although I would love one of his goat masks, with a long silky beard!

This person terrified me very much! All in all it was a very black metal Mardi Gras.

I spent a long time staring at this kingcake, which is apparently considered edible, by some.
I even considered it, until I was pulled away. There was something magical
about those colors, though.. O unnatural icing! Your evil swirls are calling me!

Instead I opted for this much more streamlined fancy-schmancy kingcake,
from a foo-foo bakery Uptown that I can’t remember the name of.
It was delicious, and had edible glitter and iridescent powder!
So gorgeous. I want edible glitter on all my food now.

Tiny Valentines

by angeliska on February 11, 2009

Valentine’s day quickly approaches in a whirlwind
of heart-shaped confetti and tattered calendar pages-
as usual, there’s more occurring all at once this week
than I could possibly attend even if I had an army of
clones at my disposal (which, incidentally, is not a bad idea!)
Although I shudder to think of what mischief 1000 Angeliskas
could get up to in even one day! Horrors! Mayhem! Deviltry!
Alas, I must do my best just with little ‘ole me- and so..
Wednesday, February 11th:

Mistress Stephanie and her Melodic Cat
will be playing a show at the Beauty Bar
to celebrate the release of their new album,
which I am very excited about.
If you’ve never seen them, well..
“Kurt Weill pulling hairballs out of
Marlene Dietrich’s throat with an electric guitar, but even sexier.”

is actually an apt description- in the very best way!
Thursday, February 12th:

I have some work in an art show, with some very dear
(and talented!) friends. There will be prints for sale, also!
Postcards are coming soon, for real. Believe it.

The opening is on Thursday, and will feature music
by Faith Delphi, and many other tasty treats!
Afterwards, I’m hoping to hop down to catch some of this fantastic line-up:
HIGH PLAINS SIGH PRESENTS: Listen.
Amy Annelle, Conjunto Los Pinkys, Oliver Rajamani
Thursday Feb 12 @ Stubbs
801 Red River
Austin, Texia
$8, *all ages* 9 PM DOORS
Saturday, February 14th:
Is Valentine’s Day, and as my sweetheart is hard at work
on his giant sculpture for the upcoming Texas Biennial,
we agreed to celebrate at our leisure at a later date- and so I will be found
at the Museum of Ephemerata for the Wonderous Instruments Exhibit

I have lent some items from my collections for the show,
and can’t wait to see it! The sublime Miss Luna Tart will be
slaying us all with her ukulele and sad songs for strumpets!

I really only wanted one thing for Valentine’s,
and it was this amazing dress. I am truly heartbroken
that I was outbid on it at the last minute- oh the pain
of the one that got away! O Ebay- thou art a cruel mistress!
Why, oh why can that perfect heart dress not be mine?
I cry blood.

I want Nina Hagen to be my Valentine this year.
Except that I want it to be 1978, which would make me
less than a fetus, less than a twinkle in my mama’s eye-
and I think it’s hard for fetuses or twinkles to perch on
stools at a fancy café sipping pernod and eating
salted caramel and pots du crème au chocolat, non?

Let’s all wake up in this room on Valentine’s and drink rose tea and feed each other these:

Will you, won’t you?
p.s. do go read what Mlle. Verhext has to say about Valentine’s:
♥ the way we kiss ♥
it’s very sweet and cheering and there’s lovely songs also!
