Snakes + Leather
by angeliska on July 3, 2009
Recently we had a wonderful opportunity to spend some time
with a very lovely snake named Sugar. Our friends Scott and Jen
who are the founders of the Museum of Natural and Artificial Ephemerata
were married recently, and went to Costa Rica for their honeymoon.
We got to take care of Sugar for them while they were exploring
the jungle. He’s an eastern garter snake, (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis)–
such a lovely creature, with an amazingly congenial temperament!
It was difficult to get an accurate photograph, but I had to try and capture
the holographic rainbows on Sugar’s gorgeous underbelly.
You can’t really tell, but I promise it was completely psychedelic + hypnotic.
Speaking of hypnotic.. I saw Patrick Wolf perform last night, and was totally enchanted.
I am often late to the table, and often friends have to force me to have a listen-
even when I know I’ll love it, it sometimes just takes me a lot longer to make
the really obvious musical discoveries. That’s what happens when you’re always
peering under rocks and toadstools- at times the fireworks going off above get overlooked.
I am so glad I let myself be swept along with the current. I honestly haven’t felt
that magical shimmering frisson of delight reserved for true golden star dreamboats
in such a long time. What a feeling! It was a marvelous show- from his impeccable
stagewear (Oh, I could go on about it at length, and plan to soonly!),
to his range of instruments and incredible charisma- he had everyone dancing
like giddy schoolchildren. Okay, so many in the audience probably were
actually just that- but still! I’ve been in the best mood ever since.
As long as were on the subject of adorable leather-clad boys,
I just have to share this very crappy picture taken with my telephone.
I found these random Austrian wine merchants wandering around the shop
wearing very well-made lederhosen! How sweet is that? Very.
I’ve been going to the Korean markets a lot and buying fish cakes, lotus roots
and giant oyster mushrooms. It’s so hard to resist the candy aisle, what with
all the lychee gummies, pumpkin milk pastilles and choco-mushrooms!
These are my favorite (just in case you wanted to buy me some candy, eh?)
and I am only slightly ashamed to admit that I ate the entire box.
Well, I shared it. Mostly. It was melting, and had to been consumed quickly!
What’s going on here, people? Baby rockstar choco-mushrooms trip out
on the ultra-papa guitar fungus? What the heck. Inquiring minds want to know.

Is this not the best snake you’ve ever seen in your life?
Pink and yellow checkerboard + stripes with ruby eyes, nestled in a tulip, hello!
Same family as Sugar, believe it or not- perhaps an albino? Very fancy.

Strawberry Honey
by angeliska on June 28, 2009
I remember a few years ago, in New Orleans,
I bought a carton of strawberries at the Farmer’s Market.
I had become somewhat ambivalent about them over the years,
having eaten far too many over-inflated, pale and watery mutants
with no flavor to speak of. They left me disappointed and thinking that
strawberries weren’t really ever as delectable to eat as they appeared to be…
The box I bought on a whim literally brought me to my knees.
I think I might’ve actually cried! I had never in my life really tasted a strawberry before!
I can’t describe how perfect they were, but needless to say I went back
the next week and bought an entire flat. We devoured the juiciest ripe
strawberries on the veranda all summer and our hands and mouths were always
sticky and red. I haven’t had any that good since. We tried our hand at
growing them last summer, and man are they cute! Not so flavorful though, alas.
(Click on this + the one below for a larger view!)
This is one of my favorite summer uniforms:
A printed seersucker sack-dress with a vintage leather belt and
20’s heels. Perfect for extremely hot weather, and making everyone
smile in the grocery store- or so I discovered. I think bright red makes
people feel happy- I know it does for me! I also discovered that wearing
red lipstick helps you concentrate and feel focused! Sounds quite kooky,
but I promise it works! One night we were all playing a hot n’ heavy
round of dominoes, and I felt my clarity waning. I put on some lippy,
and offered it around- everyone’s game improved dramatically.
True story. I wear Ruby Woo by MAC– it’s the perfect red, hands down.
I love this piece by Claire Morgan. It’s called “Fluid”- taxidermied crow
and strawberries collide, fatally + forever. The berries began to blacken
and molder after awhile! I’m not sure how long it was installed for.
I hope eternally, as I like to imagine the shriveled strawberry mummies
swinging on their nylon strings and perplexing people.
Discovered via Lau via Siege via etc.
I recently stumbled upon a wonderful photographer: Séverine Pichon.
Her self-portraits are very moving and mysterious.
I just love these images. They are some of her simpler ones,
more dreamy. I want to walk in those woods and explore
that little cottage. What’s inside there? So curious.
“Strawberry Fields Forever” is still one of my favorite songs.
I have such vivid memories of listening to it as a child,
having elaborate picnics in the living room, drinking pink tea
and wearing heart-shaped sunglasses. Not much has changed, really.
Look at this! Who made it? It reminds me a bit of Katy Horan’s work-
could it be hers? I’ll be writing more about her soonly- she lives here in Austin!
I want to be drinking this right now. In lieu of that, here are some
pretty red songs for your pretty red heart to swoon over:
❦ Red Rain – This Mortal Coil
❦ Deep Red Bells – Neko Case
❦ These Eyes Are Berries – Múm
UPDATE:
I totally forgot about this awesome print by Liza Ferneyhough aka Stellarbaby,
who happens to be one of my favorite illustrators! I am totally addicted
to her sweet gocco prints. She’s going to send me one of the mutant strawberries!
I am so excited- aren’t they bizarre and magical? Are they a result of genetic
tampering, or elfin engineering? I like the one with the thorny green seed spikes.
Oh yeah, and check out her strawberry corset! So jealous- want my torso to be a berry!
Also, y’all- I was just thinking about how I was forbidden to have
Strawberry Shortcake dolls. I don’t know why, but my mom hated them.
I was only allowed to have International Barbie too- so I had
Spanish Barbie and Eskimo Barbie. They were pretty great though.
One time I got to borrow my friend’s Strawberry Shortcake doll
for a weekend. I have a very vivid memory of deeply inhaling
the synthetic strawberry scent from the doll’s glossy hair
while listening to my dad squawking away on his first set of bagpipes.
My mama hated those too, and eventually forbade them as well-
so it was a moment of verboten enjoyment for us both!

Happy Midsummer’s Eve, Summer Solstice,
and Father’s Day my dearies- I hope this weekend
has found you blissfully enjoying the land and the water,
and hopefully a big bonfire to jump over!
I know that I am very blessed to have such an amazing
father and grandfather. We have such a strong bond,
built on mutual respect and love, and are interested
in so many of the same things- as far as art, music
and spirituality goes. I know that’s a damn rare
and immeasurably precious thing, and I try to
never take it for granted. I’ve learned so much
from these guys, and feel so lucky to have
their friendship as well. Fine fellows!
Isn’t my dad dashing? This is from his days of studying zen and fencing
at UCLA. Very Errol Flynn! Happy 100th birthday, also to the King of Swashbucklers!
My dad raised me for many years after my mom died, all by himself.
I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been for him.
He did a great job, and continues to astound me with his patience,
generosity and unconditional love. He read me stories every night,
and taught me how to read by the time I was around 3 or 4.
Hop On Pop! The Color Kittens! The Thirteen Clocks!
He spawned a voracious reader, who is still excited by his book recommendations.
Oh yes, and incidentally- he has totally revolutionized the method by which
reading is taught! He teaches adult literacy in prisons and has a truly
remarkable success rate. I could go on and on, seriously- but for now,
let me just say that he is also an incredible musician
(banjo, uilleann pipes, accordion, concertina, various whistles + recorders, etc.)
and that he is a spiritual seeker who taught me to revel in the great mystery.
Also, I used to hate a lot of things my Dad was into:
Sacred Harp (or Shape Note) singing, polenta,
quinoa, NPR, t’ai chi- now of course, I love all those things!
Go figure. I am the apple- he is the tree.
This is my beloved Grampa Charlie, holding my pop when he was a bairn.
I wonder what that enormous book they’re reading is? It must be something
pretty fantastic, because that baby is captivated!
Obviously, the book thing runs in the family.
Where to even begin to explain the wonderfulness that is my Grampa?
I cannot do him justice in little snippets, but hopefully I will be able to
embark of a project that will allow him to speak for himself, and share
his marvelous stories- of which there are many. He is 95 years old,
and he still beats me at gin rummy regularly. Sometimes I think he
gets out more than I do! We’ve traveled all over the world together:
if you feel like scrolling back through the archives, you can read
tales of our adventures through most of Europe, Scandinavia and the Balkans!
Contradiction: Oberon and Titania
In honor of Midsummer’s Eve, and the solstice,
and for my dad, who introduced me to the work
of Richard Dadd (who incidentally, killed his
own father- eek!) namely, The Fairy Feller’s
Master Stroke, (which is possibly my favorite painting)
I will share with you the treasures I have found floating through
John Coulthart’s Feuilleton, a veritable trove of wonder
which entertains and enlightens me almost daily.
Here are some succulent midsummer tidbits from his archives:

Gemini Birthday Twins: Dame Darcy + Christy Kane
by angeliska on June 19, 2009
Today is the birthday of two of my dear friend, and favorite fancy ladies:
Christy Kane and Dame Darcy! Not only do they share a birthday,
but also a predilection for making beautiful and bizarre dolls, dark victoriana,
and all manner of tattered frippery! Both are amazing artists and musicians,
and if you are not already familiar with their work, I suggest you go explore!

The description makes me crack up!
“Caught on the living celluloid for the first time-
the hot-blooded mania of Dame Darcy
conversing with dolls no bigger than Gods foot…
SEE with your own dripping wet eye
the real life adventures of crazies on parade!
Your funny bone will CRACK as raw meat
all dripping with blood holds court with the distressed Dame.
You will run around in circles for a full 9 minutes
wondering why and screaming- YES!
See into the mind of mania.
Experience the pain of deranged psuedo-adolescence.
Fathom the work these broads put into this flickering monkey!
Dare to hold hands with danger and run blindfolded into the psycho fire.
Enjoy Dame Darcy’s underpants
and drink of the elixir of swell underground film-making! ”
Oh yes- if you never caught the Dame on Blind Date, it’s a must-see!
So goldang hilarious! The best is when they’re in the hot-tub
and she’s in her mermaid costume, speaking mermaid language!
Flippity-floppity!
Speaking of mermaids..
I’m super-sad to be missing the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade once again..
One day I will make it there, in all my marine finery!
Until then, here are a few favorite images from past parades:

Larkin Grimm: Advanced Shapeshifter
by angeliska on June 18, 2009
My interview with Larkin Grimm is up at Coilhouse!
Go take a gander, and get acquainted with Parplar, if you find the chance.
It’s my favorite album of the year, hands down. Spend some time with it this summer.
It’s Kali music, and it will destroy you and heal your soul simultaneously. Promise.

Disko Duets
by angeliska on June 15, 2009
Normally I don’t end up posting the Gadjo Disko photos here until
just before the next one, for various reasons (mainly laziness!)
but it was such a fabulous night, I just couldn’t wait until then!
This ensemble was my favorite so far- even though I destroyed that lacy
chemise, and that rubber corset mutilated my solar plexus!
It was exciting being a blonde for a night, and the antlered crown
that Miss Annie Alonzi created for my birthday was so comfortable
to wear and dance in all night- I didn’t even poke anyone’s eye out!
I sewed a bustle and skirt just hours before the party, and everything
came out perfectly- I was so pleased! Oh yes, so hopefully no one here
is offended by boobies- and if you are, well- you’re probably in the wrong
part of the forest! It’s actually legal for ladies in Austin, Texas to go entirely
topless, if they choose to. We saw lots of biker ladies with their tatas out,
flying in the breeze during the weekend’s biker rally! I think it’s great.
Speaking of, The Brass Ovaries performed a pretty mind-blowing act for us!
Above is Miss Austin Lee (aka. Thunderpuss) performing some gravity-defying dancing,
she’s really quite amazing! For anyone that might write pole-dancing off
as cunning stunts for bored strippers, I will point you to this snippet,
from the headmistress of the Brass Ovaries, Miss Natasha:
(who performed in drag with moustache und cojones y ding-dong
in tighty-whities, oh my! Wish I had me some decent photos of that!)
“Pole dancing came to modern fame through 1950s burlesque clubs
and today in gentlemen’s clubs but the dance evolved from yoga
performed on a wooden pole and on rope. Known as Mallakhamb,
it is a competitive sport in India where gymnasts perform
feats and poses while hanging from a pole or rope.”
Ah, Mlle. Alisan in her pavonine splendor! So happy this lady is my neighbor now!
She is a sculptor who tells me funny stories about living in France + Japan..
We went and jumped in the springs today and drank fancy juice and it was such bliss!
We were so sore from dancing, but the healing waters cured us- it’s really quite miraculous.
Some of my favorite portraits I’ve taken at Gadjo Disko are couples, or pairs.
Lots of people end up falling in love, or hooking up- and some have even conceived
because of the good-lovin’ vibe at the Disko! It’s a fact- meet Colette!
Something about the interactions captured really charms me, particularly
these ladies, Mattie + Penny (formerly Pattie, no really!) Clubb.
They are twins, obviously- and both are really awesome,
as you can see, from their fabulous outfits!
Amelia + Guilherme are really the most adorable couple I’ve seen in awhile!
It makes me happy just to be around them. Look at those smiles- swoon!
Frannie + Jonny, oh my goodness! This picture makes me laugh with glee!
The vaudeville belly-dancer belle found Charlie Chaplin and they fell in love- true story.
Jeffie + Sarahfina- ain’t it grand when your favorite people find each other?
Jakob + Aaron = friends with a capacity for insane genius.
The King of the Dancefloor + Mack = I’m actually out of words to explain how much I love this.
This is Sienna + I, at 5am en route to sustenance. When you engage in a truck photoshoot,
you must wear safety glasses, and carry a devil’s claw for good luck! I know the mojo worked,
because I find myself surrounded by such astoundingly wonderful friends!
¡Las muchachas borrachas son muy afortunadas!

Disko Disko!
by angeliska on June 12, 2009
It’s time for GADJO DISKO, babies!
I’m going to be up late tonight, working on my ensemble-
I’ve got to construct a skirt, since I couldn’t find a suitable one
anywhere- though I did experience a veritable shoe miracle!
I’ll relate the tale in full later- but for now, here’s a few of my favorite
images from the last disko, back in March:
I remember my mother painting details in her intricate collages with touches
of fluorescent tempera paint. She was incorporating bits of her psychedelic youth
in with lonesome cowboys, swirling supernovas, cactus flowers and lost highways.
I loved those colors, and swiped them to paint with every chance I got.
Imagine my delight when I discovered Kryolan’s UV reactive makeup!
It’s amazing to play with- I’ll definitely be experimenting with it more..
My beloved Faith Delphi! She is the cutest elf. She comes from the land
of wet trees and pyramids. She sings songs about her doppelgangers.
Seeing Golem play was so fantastic- I love them.
The singer, Annette, was very pregnant, and belting out songs wearing a sassy red dress.
I don’t know how she managed to play accordion-
but that baby’s going to be a good dancer, I can tell you that much!
They played my favorite Serbian folk dancing song,
which made my night- it’s the most fun ever.
Miss Adrienne, making a marvelous spectacle with the Minor Mishap Marching Band!
Alix Hawtpantz! Watch out for flying arrows! His hotpants say
“Lookin’ Cute – Feelin’ Cute” Yes, indeed- he is so beautiful
that everyone just stopped dancing and gazed! I love him.
Alright. Back to my trusty little singer featherweight machine,
heaps of ruffles and tulle, and too much green tea.
Hope your weekend is lovely- see you on the other side of the disko!
Scrapyard Honey
by angeliska on June 4, 2009
The other day we went out to the scrapyard.
When your sweetheart is a blacksmith, this is a pretty common
field trip. If you’re hunting for the perfect piece of metal junk
or odd machine parts, then it becomes a wonderland.
There are giant mounds of oddments, taller than my house.
The day we went, it was bright and dusty and smelled like
engine oil and the ozone tang of storms, though the sun beat down
through cotton fluffs to us. The fellas + forklift managed to get two
enormously heavy bookbinding machines from the 1800’s into the truck.
I read my encyclopedia of serial killers, and snapped pictures of rusty things.
As we were leaving, we noticed this very fancy turkey buzzard, proudly
displaying his resplendent plumage to yon prospective mate- who feigned
disinterest on a nearby pole. He stayed like that for the longest time,
looking like an eagle on a coin- except with a head that looked like skinned meat,
and a perfume to match! I love vultures. They are majestically scrappy birds.
These gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) butterflies have taken up residence in the bog.
They’ve found the dried pitchers to be ideal spots for chillaxin,
and showing off their silvery spots. For this, I forgive the caterpillars their
taste for my fuschia and passionflower vines. I watched one crysallize.
It was beyond belief. To turn from worm to horn to winged thing.
really is magic. How could I forget about that? Thanks for the reminder.
Believe it or not, I had to contort myself into a bizarre backbend, in the dying light,
carefully avoiding crushing the irises or becoming entangled in the sticky tendrils
of the sundews. I had to try, though- because they were all so chic, sipping
nepenthe dew at the Carnivore Cafe. Ooh la! Paparazzi! The trio took turns
preening and lazily flapping their wings as the sun sunk behind the projects.
You can see from the blur, that it was already really too late, but I had to capture
these venus flytrap seeds before they dispersed. Don’t they look exactly like caviar?
In our garden- everything is coming up bit by bit. Check out the crazy-thick kale stem!
Proud of what we grow, and ready for more. I want to pick it, not buy it.
Also, tomorrow evening I’ll be headed to this:
FINGERS – TENDER AND TRUE, NIMBLE AND MOBILE,
OUR HAND IS WIDE OPEN UP, WAITING FOR YOUR TOUCH ON OUR LIFE LINE.
THESE ROVING FINGERS ARE ANXIOUS TO TAKE YOU

Excesses + Torn Dresses
by angeliska on May 29, 2009
Hello Mister Bobcat! I love your face. It looks a bit like my face
when I’ve had my snoot to the grindstone for far too long,
and am yearnin’ to don some tattered finery and tear it up.
Oh, and didn’t I just? And how! This is how my face looks
when I realize that my silk velvet 1930’s gown won’t last the night.
Good thing I wore my unmentionables, eh? Oops, I just mentioned ’em!
I got to wear my magical hat from Mlle. Verhext before it gets too hot for it-
isn’t it just the best? It has hypnotizing powers, so watch out!
(Photo by Amelia Doublespeak, isn’t she lovely?)
We ventured out to Party Like It’s 1929– a new soiree at The Carousel Lounge,
one of my favorite spots for night-time carousing (even though it’s only open until midnight- how quaint!)
Much apricot brandy, honey whiskey and um, some absinthe was consumed throughout the course of the evening.
Dangerous! I threw caution to the wind, kicked up my heels and was very naughty indeed.
We were joined by the impossibly beautiful Ekaterina Konovalova,
who made us all swoon with her devastating hat and gloves.
I have lots of other photographs from the evening, a very few of which can be seen
on my flickr, and others which shall never see the light of day unless I one day
decide to blackmail my cohorts of the evening
(and by default, further incriminate myself!)
Honestly, I had been positively monastic (well, practically) for months,
and I just plain forgot my sense! Oh my stars did I ever pay for it the next day!
When I finally poked my tousled, bleary head out the door, the whole world was
spinning. I know you can relate (well, I truly hope you can anyhow!) because
I suppose if we never got the occasional bastard butcher of a brutal hangover,
we’d think it was perfectly alright to go around swigging apricot brandy and
destroying perfectly nice dresses all the time. Well, and some still do!
I felt like this guy all day. It was pretty pathetic. I learnt my lesson, though!
I can’t help but be reminded of one of my favorite stories by Dorothy Parker,
“You Were Perfectly Fine”, which describes the horror and humor of a nasty
hangover in equal doses. I highly recommend that you read it immediately,
and maybe afterwards, you’ll tell me a story about how you were
perfectly awful and how funny it was later, won’t you?
