Gilded Bats

by angeliska on August 20, 2009

I am finally beginning to feel halfway human again after
le disko deluge, (yes more on that soon!)
As usual, it’s not quite Thursday anymore– but c’est la vie!
So many things have been happening lately that my heart
feels filled with stars and champagne, and despite disko-induced
aches and pains, I’ve been breaking into ecstatic jigs and hoppings.

Yesterday morning, however- I was totally despondent to realize
upon waking that the Bat for Lashes concert here was completely sold out!
Horrors and woe accompanied me to the shop, where I cobbled together
a little box of treasure and good-luck talismans- as a gift of thanks
on the off-chance that Miss Natasha should wander in.
Imagine my amazement when about an hour later she did just that!
What a lovely and kind lady- she hugged me and made me the happiest
creature in the world as she listened to my sad tale and generously
offered to put me on the guestlist! Oh frabjous day- calloo callay!
How incredible is that? Very. What a lucky girl I am!

♡ The show was phenomenal. Excellent sound, a respectful crowd, and
she and her band sounded marvelous. I highly recommend catching them live
if you get the chance- they really do put on a fantastic live show.
Also, her drummer is a bad-ass. I love amazing girl drummers so much.
The new album is just lovely- totally my soundtrack lately.

♡ Lately we’ve been seeing some astoundingly beautiful sunsets-
they stain the world cotton candy grapefruit soda pink and lilac fluff,
and I take a million swirly photos trying to capture their majesty.

♡ I love getting surprise visits from my fairy-godson Sascha and his
lovely maman the elf. We went on a walk, hunting for rainbows.
He is the elfin prince child of my heart and now he can say words! Conversations, ahoy!

♡ I’ve been pretty obsessed with M.A.C. gold eyeshadow, and have been
gilding my eyelids most days. Wearing a vintage gold dress that smells funny,
and jewelry from Lux Revival. This was taken hurriedly before the concert,
so forgive the overexposure, one day I’ll actually buy a low-light lense.
I need some photography equipment guidance! Anyone want to be my tech-sherpa?

Henri Plaat’s short film “I am an old smoking moving Indian Movie Star 1968”
(Danke, meine liebe Elizabeta!)

♡ I saw both Moon and District 9 recently, and both were incredible. Go see!
They showed the 1969 original video for David Bowie’s Space Oddity
at the Alamo before the previews, and I realized I’d never seen it before!
Can you even handle how nerd-sexy he is? Those crooked teeth
make my pants feel funny. I have a thing for dental deformities.
♡ I ordered some goodies from Korres recently, (using the iCiNG discount,
thanks Miss Darling!
) and am excited to try everything out.
The company started in an ancient Greek homeopathic pharmacy,
and they don’t use any synthetic components, so I’m very intrigued.
♡ I can’t wait to be cleaning my filth palace and dancing this weekend at
Smack! and the Micro-Nano Party at Cheer Up Charlie’s!

♡ The other night I was laying in the hammock, staring at the moon,
and I saw these big, pale bats flying overhead. They are much larger
than the mexican freetails, and sort of buff colored- I think they’re called
Pallid Bats. I’m so excited that they have made Grackle Grotto their home!
Got woken in the night, by a mystic golden light.
My head soaked in river water.
I had been dressed in a coat of armor.
They called a horse out of the woodland.
“Take her there, through the desert shores.”
They sang to me, “This is yours to wear.
You’re the chosen one, there’s no turning back now.”
The smell of redwood giants. The banquet for the shadows.
Horse and I, we’re dancers in the dark.
Came upon the headdress. It was gilded, dark and golden.
The children sang. I was so afraid- I took it to my head and prayed.
They sang to me, “This is yours to wear.
You’re the chosen one, there’s no turning back.”
They sang to me, “This is yours to wear.
You’re the chosen one, there’s no turning back.”
There is no turning back. There is no turn.
There is no turning back. There is no turn.

Do tell me about any new favorite things of yours, won’t you?
I’ve been hungrily amassing lots of new music, films, books,
friends, opportunities and experiences lately! What’s new for you?

Hello dear lovely lady! I stumbled across your blog about two months ago when I was looking for reviews on Neil Morris’ Dark Earth perfume, and your marvelous solstice post showed up when I went burrowing further regarding the “Path of the Northern Hag” street he referenced in the description. I’ve been stopping by ever since to peep in on your enchanting shenanigans & magical moments.
You don’t know me, but since you asked I *will* tell you about some haunting, eerie, wonderful new musics I found through Headphone commute (you are probably a Coilhouse reader, heck maybe a contributer, so you may have already seen the ink) but this mix, is so dark, mysterious and ghostly sounding that it just knocked me flat on my bottom and I had to share: http://reviews.headphonecommute.com/2009/08/09/modern-classical/
It is really perfect to put you in the mind for cooler weather and dim-lit, dusty hauntings.
Along the same lines are a few books that I’ve recently read: Drood, by Dan Simmons, a re-imagined tale of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins and a sinister gentleman they get caught up with, and The Seance by John Harwood & Affinity, by Sarah Waters -both about victorian spiritualists and maybe-maybe not ghosts and ghouls.
Other than that my favourite things right now are cobweb-weight merino-silk yarn the colour of a raven’s wing reflected by the light of a full moon, and smooth, polished bitch wood needles…knitting up a dark lacy shawl fit for midnight trips down winding stone staircase chasing mysterious family phantoms.

I’ve also been wearing gold eyeshadow these days and I really love it. It makes me feel fancy. I may need to try the MAC….

What an inspiring post yet again!
About Korres: It’s good, but the also Greek company Apivita (www.apivita.com) is much better (only natural products, no synthetics etcpp), their day creams are not cheap but worth it (Queen Bee series – <3).

I’m always so happy when one of your posts shows up in my bloglovin queue. A dose of exuberant dark romanticism is so good for the soul and always sets me right again.
I saw a short film today called Madame Tutli-Putli that I thought you might appreciate. I wonder if you’ve seen it.
The official film site no longer has it available, but it’s posted in 2 parts on youtube:

Oh man. I can’t get over the Space Oddity video. Space vixens!!! And his doofy facial expressions when he is in the persona of Ground Control trying vainly to contact Major Tom. Oh god, it’s fantastic.
My new favorite thing of all things is a book I just finished reading called ‘Foundling’ by D.M. Cornish. It is apparently first in a series called ‘Monster-Blood Tattoo’ (hahaha! like a 5-year-old boy named it!), and I certainly hope the library has the next volume because oh damn. I am smitten. It’s a young adult/children’s fantasy/steampunk book that has grabbed me and sucked me in in a way that no book has done in a long time. Pirates! Monsters! Heroic Orphans! Charming illustrations by the author! Hooray!
I’m also going through an intense Nick Cave phase. One could say that I have been going through a ‘Nick Cave phase’ for about 3 years now, really, but it’s especially strong these last few days. I like his Beatles covers:

Aw, Angeliska !
I am sorry to repeat the same thing over and over again … But you are so pretty, dear ! You are stunning ♥
And we seem to have the same “mojo” : I never buy tickets for my favourite bands, I always end up on the guestlist ! I met all my (well, only the alive ones) icons and made friend with them 🙂
It’s always so nice when people you admire are actually as NICE as you imagined ! (or even nicer)
Kiss Kiss from Paris !

ive purchased korres products from sephora on numerous occasion. though pricy, they are worth it. they actually are incredibly made so you dont the feeling that you could be producing such similar items for much less, as with most natural products. jealous about the bats! i love watching them swoop down and about eating insects in the sky during the night, unfortunately large cities don’t allow for such wonders. your location must be a natural wonderland!

Very cool. I saw Bat for Lashes back in May sometime in a church in Philly. The girl’s got a voice and a sick style.
Heh, my name is Sasha too.
And if you are really interested in what I marvel in, just go to my blogie.

DEAR ALITA:
I love Sxip! I’ve known him since I was 16 or so..
Can’t wait for the show on the 11th w/ Zlatne Uste!
It’s the night I arrive in NYC- let’s meet up, girl!
Okay, so is the earl grey vanilla tea mixed with the moonshine?
What a cocktail! Sounds pretty scrumptious.
DEAR HEATHER:
Oh, thank you! I love all those skirts so much, and also
Hannah’s blog – Knick Knacks + Ric Rac.
That lady is such genius! Her house is so amazing.
DEAR MATHYLD:
Pshaw! I’m blushing, now!
Isn’t it wonderful when that happens?
It feels so good to meet musicians/artists/icons you adore,
and discover a good friend there. I certainly feel blessed for those experiences.
DEAR NICOLE:
More details you say? Well.. Let’s see..
Natasha Khan gave me a big hug, and we were both really sweaty and it was awesome.
I was a huge dork, and kept hopping around and hopefully didn’t make her uncomfortable
with my fawning. I gave her a leetle box that I collaged with bits of red coxcomb,
leopards in trees, a vulture and gold dust. Inside were magic earrings, a red coral bat,
pearly bits, a cicada, dried ferns.. Hmm, what else? All things to bring luck + protection!
Also, I gave her pomegranate gum and forgot to say everything I meant to,
and said thank you either too much or too little and was ecstatic and nervous and ridiculous.
Hopefully it wasn’t too noticeable! She’s so sweet and lovely and much taller than I’d imagined.
The show was really remarkable- her voice is even better live (if you can believe that!),
and the sound was fantastic. I’m listening to Two Suns non-stop, it’s so wonderful!
